Race Preview: Amman Valley Half Mile Open Practice and Race Meeting, Wales
Updated: Aug 4
The DTRA and Indian Motorcycle are thrilled to announce that we’ll be heading to Amman Valley Trotting Club on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th September 2020, for an open practice event and race meeting at its fantastic half mile track.
We’ve appreciated the patience of all of our club members while we’ve worked hard to be able to safely and responsibly hold race meetings again, and hope to see as many of you as possible for some long-awaited, and much-needed motorcycle fun times in the South Wales valleys!
We’ll be running all of our usual classes over the weekend, including a showcase from the Hooligan riders, so all of our new and old DTRA members will have the opportunity to race. Practice will take place on the Saturday, with racing on the Sunday.
Of course, this event will be going ahead provided that there are no further increases to the current lockdown rules and we’re able to meet the COVID-19 safety protocols set out by Amman Valley and NORA Motorsport. We’re sure you will all appreciate that there are still a lot of uncertainties right now and while the DTRA will do everything possible to ensure this event takes place, the safety of our team, volunteers and riders is our priority. Thanks to all of our club members for your understanding!
*Please note, this event will replace the previously scheduled DTRA event at Eastbourne Speedway over the same dates*
Signing up to race at our Amman Valley weekend
Please be aware that initially this event is only open to DTRA club members who signed up for the 2020 season. If we have spaces, we’ll open up the event to non-members at a later date,
If you want to join us at Amman Valley, like all usual DTRA meetings you MUST sign up - and pay - in advance for each class you wish to race in over the weekend.
Entries will be opening mid-August and will close at midday on 4th September. We'll update this post with the sign-up link as soon as entries open.
About the course at Amman Valley
Normally used as a horse trotting track, Amman Valley is, at half a mile, the largest track that we race on in the DTRA championship. The track is made of deep, coarse and absorbent dirt with a gravel-like texture, with corners that are wide and long and offer plenty of opportunities for overtaking.
Here’s where to find the track:
Running order and racing times
So what can you all look forward to over the weekend? Here’s the schedule as it currently stands:
10:30 - 14:30 - OPEN PRACTICE FOR ALL CLASSES
15:30 - 18:30 - RACING FOR PRO AND ADULT INTERS, AND A HOOLIGAN SHOWCASE
SUNDAY - RACING FOR ALL OTHER CLASSES: YOUTH, ROOKIE, MINIBIKE, THUNDERBIKE, TWINS AND VINTAGE
Daily running order and times are subject to change - we’ll update this post as soon as we have these finalised.
COVID-19 PROTOCOLS: Help us to race safely over the weekend
As we’ve mentioned above, we’ll be following any and all COVID-19 safety protocols set out by Amman Valley and NORA Motorsport over the course of the weekend.
The situation is ever-changing and so it’s not possible for us to say exactly what those will be right now (we’ll share further details as soon as we can), but please be aware that all riders and any other guests will be expected to follow the protocols respectfully and in full. This is to ensure everyone’s safety and that the event goes ahead smoothly, and enjoyably.
We’ve all missed racing and hanging out trackside, let’s make the most of the opportunity to race and look out for one another like we always do!
Track facilities for riders and spectators
Having been re-developed within the last few years, Amman Valley Trotting Club has good facilities for riders and spectators. Bearing in mind that some facilities may be restricted, or unavailable over the weekend due to COVID-19 safety protocols, here’s what you can expect to find at the track:
Well-maintained, separate male and female toilets
75-seat grandstand for spectators
Loads of trackside space for parking and camping
Nearby amenities to Amman Valley Trotting Club
Being in a semi-rural location, but there are large supermarkets 6 miles from the track, there are also 3 smaller supermarkets less than a mile from the site.
The new onsite facilitiy is now complete and has a café and bar which we would like you to support Please bring all the camping gear that you’ll need for the weekend. Given the current situation, please be considerate of the safety of those who are running the local amenities and don’t use them unless you really feel that you have to.
We also highly recommend bringing a gazebo or van awning so you’re ready for whatever the Welsh weather has in store…

While we can guarantee a great weekend of racing, we can’t guarantee the South Wales weather, although it’s good to have an idea of what the weekend might look like. As the Amman Valley track is pretty absorbent, our racing shouldn’t be affected by any rain unless it’s particularly severe.
Keep an eye on the local weather forecast below so you know what gear to pack.
For those of you wondering, we only ever call off our race meetings if the weather forecast is exceptionally poor. We appreciate that many of our riders have long distances to travel and it’s never our intention to waste anyone’s time, so if a race needs to be called off, we always aim to make the announcement in plenty of time beforehand.
After a long summer without racing, we’re really looking forward to seeing as many of our riders as possible at Amman Valley, especially our new members who haven’t yet had the opportunity to race.
If you have any further questions, PLEASE check our website first to see whether your query is answered there - otherwise, just drop us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org, or message us on Facebook and we’ll get back to you as quickly as we can.
Don’t forget to follow us on Instagram too, and of course keep checking this blog for more photos, videos and updates on all of our events.
To all riders and possible spectators, travel safe, and we can finally say that we’ll see you at the races!
