Indian Motorcycles DTRA Euros Round 2: El Rollo at Wheels and Waves - Race Report and Results

Updated: Jun 28, 2019

Following the successful launch of the DTRA Euros series at Hells Race in the Netherlands, the top flat track riders from across the continent, and their fans, made the journey all the way to San Sebastian in Spain for the beautifully-situated El Rollo event.

The days leading up to the event, which was presented as part of the annual Wheels and Waves surfing and motorcycle festival in Biarritz, were filled with heavy rainstorms, giving the organisers a tough job in preparing the temporary track for the racers.

A bumper entry of Hooligan and Vintage riders made for some great heat races. The variety of bikes, and riders who travelled from all over Europe were a fantastic credit to the event, and the thousands of spectators that made the trip down from Biarritz for the day were treated to some spectacular riding in all of the classes.

In the Pros, it was Ferran Sastre who was pretty much untouchable all day, and sealed his lead in our Euros championship with 2 out of 2 wins on the day, and in the series so far. Maikel Dijkstra from the Netherlands held onto a well-deserved second place ahead of French rider Wilfried Delestre, who managed to stay ahead of Franc Serra and Gary Birtwistle for a hard-earned 3rd place.

Pro Class Top Five:

  1. Ferran Sastre - #15

  2. Maikel Dijkstra - #58

  3. Wilfried Delestre - #52

  4. Franc Serra - #18

  5. Gary Birtwistle - #111

Both the Hooligan and Vintage classes were not straightforward in terms of championship points; Martin Huning, who won the first round of the Vintage championship, was knocked off the top step of the podium by series organiser Anthony Brown, who won all of his heats and both finals on the day.

Vintage Class Top Five:

  1. Anthony Brown - #47

  2. Martin Honing - #51

  3. Michel Colaizzi - #98

  4. Hubert Bastie - #89

  5. Giles LeenKnegt - #99

The Hooligan races were also dominated by the eventual winner of the final, Wilfried Delestre, who muscled his borrowed Indian Scout to an awesome final ahead of veteran Italian rider Jacapo Monti and DTRA UK Nationals championship points leader Gary Birtwistle.

Hooligan Class Top Five:

  1. Wilfried Delestre - #52

  2. Jacopo Monti - #41

  3. Gary Birtwistle - #111

  4. Frank Chatokhine - #5

  5. Lee Kirkpatrick - #14

Immediately following the races, the riders loaded and jumped in their race trucks to head back up to Village Cité de l’Océan in Biarritz for the podiums and presentations.

A look ahead at DTRA Euros Round 3, Greenfield Dirt Track

The final round of the Euros championship is still wide open in all of the classes and promises to be a great race on the Greenfield Dirt Track oval in the UK on Saturday 21st September.

We’re looking forward to welcoming Japanese professional flat track racer, Masatoshi Ohmori, to ride with us and showcase his distinctive riding style. It’s going to be a memorable end to the first year of our European championship and we hope to see many of our international riders there again.

Thank you to all of our riders that made the trip for El Rollo, as always we are thrilled that everyone had such a great time and made it home safely. The next race in the DTRA calendar will be Rounds 4 and 5 of the Nationals championship, taking place on July 20th and 21st on the ½ mile track at Ammanford, Wales. Entries will be opening soon, so keep an eye on our Facebook and Instagram  pages for updates, and of course we’ll be posting a preview blog post with all of the information you need to get ready to race.

In the meantime, keep checking back on the blog for more updates from the DTRA team, and we’ll see you at the races.
