Race Preview: DTRA Euros Round 2 - El Rollo at Wheels and Waves, San Sebastian, Spain

Inarguably the most exotic race location in the DTRA calendar this year - well, apart from Middlesbrough perhaps - is San Sebastian in Spain, where we’re heading next for the El Rollo flat track race, presented by Indian Motorcycle as part of the annual Wheels and Waves motorcycling and surfing festival. This race counts as Round 2 of our European championship and takes place on Saturday 15th June at San Sebastian’s Lasarte Hippodrome; entries for the race are now closed as the maximum number of riders has been reached, so if you’re all signed up and raring to go, lucky you - you’re in for an awesome experience.

Our very own Pro rider, Leah Tokelove took 1st place in the Super Hooligan race at El Rollo 2018, and she’ll be returning this year to defend her title. If you’re heading to the festival a few days before, don’t miss the Deus Swank Rally enduro race in Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle on Friday 14th - Leah and our very own Race Director, Anthony Brown, will be racing on a BSA sidecar in the ‘Grand Finale’. Get down there from 11am and show ‘Tinky and Tokey’ your support!

About the track at Lasarte Hippodrome

Lasarte Hippodrome is an iconic quarter-mile long dirt track, typically used for horse racing. El Rollo has been described by its creators as ‘The Dusty Race’ - so expect to get loose and very mucky.

Here’s where to find the track:

Running order and racing times

Here’s the information we have on the timings of El Rollo:

11:30 - Public access to track

13:30 - 16:30 - Racing takes place

19:00 - Prize giving in the Village Cité de l’Océan Biarritz

Lasarte Hippodrome is about an hour by car from the Village, so give yourself plenty of time to get there and back if you’re staying in or around Biarritz.

Track facilities for riders and spectators

Being a long-established racing venue, Lasarte Hippodrome has good facilities, which include:

  • Bar serving hot and cold drinks

  • Locker rooms

  • Loads of car parking spaces

  • Spectator viewing areas

We suggest bringing your own food to the event as we can’t guarantee that much (if any) will be available at the track. Don’t forget plenty of water too - it’ll be dusty and warm!

Weather in San Sebastian

The weather seems promising for El Rollo - here’s what the weekend looks like so far:

In the event of any changes or updates to the running of the day, weather-related or otherwise, we recommend following Wheels and Waves on Facebook and Instagram to ensure you catch them. Of course, we’ll do our best to share any El Rollo-related updates that may affect our riders too.

*Important information for Pro riders - Copa Rodi flat track series*

As El Rollo clashes with the second round of the Copa Rodi flat track series, taking place at Rocco’s Ranch Circuit in Barcelona, we’ve teamed up with Dirt Track de Campions so that points scored by our Pro riders at this event will count towards their overall DTRA European championship result. Best of luck to our riders participating in this event instead.

What’s still to come in the 2019 DTRA European championship

The final round of the Euros at Greenfield Dirt Track, taking place on Saturday 21st September, is certain to be a great finale to the series. We’re thrilled that professional flat track racer, Masatoshi Ohmori will be joining us as a guest rider from Japan - Masa has visited Europe before for the Superprestigio invitational, however this will be his first outdoor race in the UK and we could not be more excited to welcome him. Renowned for his impressive riding style and flair for low, low sliding, keep your eyes on Masa as he’s guaranteed to put on a show to bring the first year of our new European championship to a close.

We hope that this tells you everything you need to know to make your final preparations for Indian Motorcycle's El Rollo - should you have any further questions, PLEASE check the information on the Euros page of our website first to see whether your query is answered there - otherwise, please just drop us an email at info@dirttrackriders.co.uk, or message us on Facebook and we’ll get back to you as quickly as we can.

Don’t forget to follow us on Instagram too, and of course keep checking this blog for photos, videos and updates from our Nationals, Hooligan and Euros championships.

To all riders and spectators, travel safe, and see you at the races for the second round of our international championships, at what we are sure is going to be an unforgettable location.
